MSU-Michigan Open Thread

February 10, 2009 by kj

CBE Classic Michigan State v Missouri

I want YOU to make good use of the open thread.

My finely-honed blogger instincts tell me tonight’s game has more potential for emotion/disagreement in the open thread than has existed for previous games.

Since I won’t be around to supervise, I would ask everyone involved to abide by two simple rules:

1. No profanity.  (The man in the photo’s example notwithstanding.)

2. Be civil.  (Disagreement is fine, but stick to the facts.)

Beyond that, have fun.  Game recap may or may not be up late tonight, depending on my postgame activities.  Otherwise, I’ll get the recap up some time tomorrow.

Oh, and GO GREEN!  BEAT MICHIGAN!

Very little discussion at work today regarding tonight’s big game.

  2. on February 10, 2009 at 6:35 pm Jumpin' Johnny G

All this hand wringing is making me laugh. The Wolvos are one of the worst shooting teams in the country. Put our usual defense on them and watch as they throw up everything but the kitchen sink. You can’t win with ‘hoping it goes in’ from the outside.

    Take it to them inside!

    This is gonna be fun!

    go green

Dylan must be trying to make me look bad, Morgan is dressed…

    http://noise.typepad.com/hey_joe/2009/02/morgan-dressed-still-doubtful.html

  4. on February 10, 2009 at 6:59 pm Chris

I think my comment was blocked. Joe Rexrode is reporting that Morgan is dressed (and not in a suit)

  5. on February 10, 2009 at 7:02 pm Chris

Great, Hightower officiating and Musberger announcing. At least we have Lavin.

  6. on February 10, 2009 at 7:18 pm mk

come on.. how come no fouls have been called when msu’s going for layups!!!

and sims pushing and grabbing a rebound, and no foul?

  7. on February 10, 2009 at 7:19 pm Adam

JohnnyG, did you see the UConn game? Are you watching the game right now?

    The Wolvos play well.

  8. on February 10, 2009 at 7:20 pm Spartalytical

MSU has to start grabbing those defensive boards.

  9. on February 10, 2009 at 7:20 pm MooTheKow

This is going to be a very frustrating game to watch. First game of the year that I think reffing will be a serious factor. Some awwwwful no-calls when MSU is goin to the hoop tonight so far and some really ticky-tacky calls on MSU on the other end. Frustrating. MSU Needs to just start playing better to overcome that… not gonna finish this game with a W otherwise.

  10. on February 10, 2009 at 7:20 pm Saltwater

Brent Musberger’s life is better for having spent just 15 minutes with Stu Douglas. Jesus…

  11. on February 10, 2009 at 7:22 pm mk

finally, hightower is calling a foul for roe!

  12. on February 10, 2009 at 7:23 pm Mark in DC

I like Roe’s newfound offensive assertiveness. Hope he keeps it up. A second post scoring option would be great to have.

  13. on February 10, 2009 at 7:25 pm Mark in DC

Roe again! That’s at least 6 already.

  14. on February 10, 2009 at 7:27 pm Mark in DC

    SUUUUMERRRS!!!!

  15. on February 10, 2009 at 7:28 pm mk

    High flying summers!!!!!

  16. on February 10, 2009 at 7:28 pm Spartalytical

    Walton’s freakin’ owning Harris.

  17. on February 10, 2009 at 7:29 pm Spartalytical

State needs to continue to mix it up, collapsing that 1-3-1 and dumping it to Roe or Suton on the baseline, then back outside. So far, it’s looking decent.

  18. on February 10, 2009 at 7:30 pm Adam

Durrell jumped like fifteen feet. Dang.

  19. on February 10, 2009 at 7:31 pm Spartalytical

I didn’t think he was going to reach it.

  20. on February 10, 2009 at 7:32 pm mk

    please, no more turnovers…

  21. on February 10, 2009 at 7:34 pm mk

come on, allen… after a missed 3, offensive foul… you can do better…

  22. on February 10, 2009 at 7:38 pm Mark in DC

We need to start scoring. We’re looking good on D but so far the O has been kind of lackluster.

  23. on February 10, 2009 at 7:46 pm mk

green… after missing a layup, and intentional foul?

Was hightower apologizing(?) to suton for not calling dume’s foul at the indiana game???

  24. on February 10, 2009 at 7:49 pm Spartalytical

    Ugly, but we’ll take it.

  25. on February 10, 2009 at 7:51 pm MooTheKow

Better up 8 than down 8 that’s for sure.

  26. on February 10, 2009 at 8:04 pm Mark in DC

Indeed, in a game like this 8 points is like 16.

  27. on February 10, 2009 at 8:05 pm Spartalytical

I like how the “Moments of the Game” montage was a bunch of shots of sweatshirts, pregame chest-thumping, and then Summers flying for that ally-oop.

  28. on February 10, 2009 at 8:09 pm Jumpin' Johnny G

Ah, excuse me but the Spartans would bury UConn. Overrated east team who played sloppy against the Wolvos.

This is fun b’cth slapping these schlubs.

  29. on February 10, 2009 at 8:10 pm mk

    hightower, what the …?

    hightower, see the video!!!!!!!!!!!1

  30. on February 10, 2009 at 8:11 pm Jason

Hightower man-love to his fellow ref

  31. on February 10, 2009 at 8:12 pm spartan08

    GOD I HATE HIGHTOWER

  32. on February 10, 2009 at 8:13 pm Adam

Hightower shows his true colors once again.

  33. on February 10, 2009 at 8:18 pm kingma10

Spartans will beat UM with their best player Hightower

  34. on February 10, 2009 at 8:18 pm mk

    um… we need walton.

    smooth shots by lucas!!!

  35. on February 10, 2009 at 8:20 pm Mark in DC

At this rate I don’t think U of M will hit 30. Not that we’re an offensive juggernaut, but Lucas seems to be heating up a little bit.

  36. on February 10, 2009 at 8:24 pm Mark in DC

I spoke too soon. I blame that third foul on Walton – if he were in there they wouldn’t be on this run.

  37. on February 10, 2009 at 8:37 pm Adam

How about Hightower not blowing the whistle when Kalin got hammered? I mean, no one else blew the whistle either but…Hightower is a butt.

  38. on February 10, 2009 at 8:38 pm mk

now with walton back, let’s do some solid defense and hopefully make time for some shots?

  39. on February 10, 2009 at 8:44 pm mk

not good…don’t just stand.. .run around!!

    yes!!! huge shot by lucas!!!

  40. on February 10, 2009 at 8:53 pm Heath

It’s funny – this is like a recruiting dream for us. Harris and Sims would be such superior players if they were at MSU.

  41. on February 10, 2009 at 8:58 pm Mark in DC

I hope this is the last time we see the 1-3-1 this year. Despite the win it’s clear we still haven’t figured it out.

  42. on February 10, 2009 at 9:00 pm Adam

Three games in a row where the opponents don’t break 50. Whatever we’re doing on defense, I like it.

  43. on February 10, 2009 at 9:00 pm Zeke

I declare this a satisfactory victory- a defensive explosion, just like everybody thought. Haha.

  44. on February 10, 2009 at 9:00 pm Mark in DC

On the plus side we still haven’t lost on the road. I’ll take it.

  45. on February 10, 2009 at 9:02 pm Ben

Delvon had a great game tonight, but for me, the player of the game is Travis Walton. He completely neutralized Manny Harris.

I said to all my friends today that if we came out of Ann Arbor with a win, we’d go on to win the conference. Amazing effort, fitting result. Well done, boys.

  46. on February 10, 2009 at 9:05 pm mk

What an exciting win despite a very very slow paced game! Player of the game seems to be Lucas who made timely shots almost every time UM got closer and closer. Roe was also sensational. However, Allen was still struggling: defense was not impressive and ball-handling was also shaky.

Hope Morgan gets much better by the time when msu plays at purdue.

    Good win!!!

still…. will hightower be at our next game also?

  47. on February 10, 2009 at 9:14 pm Jumpin' Johnny G

This was a good win for the Green & White.

We are now 10-2 in the league and 20-4 total.

Nice way to begin the quest for the Final Four.

    Bring it IZZO!

  48. on February 10, 2009 at 9:33 pm Ryan (collegefastbreak)

As a Michigan fan, I’m miffed. But as a MSU fan when they don’t play Michigan or Oakland, I have to say that was a dominating performance, clean up the silly turnovers and this team is lethal 1-10.

  49. on February 10, 2009 at 9:33 pm Mark in Chicago

Chris Allen is a black hole right now. His game should be catch-and-shoot and forget putting the ball on the floor. Only bad things happen when he does.

  50. on February 10, 2009 at 11:53 pm TMadison25

Finally… TMadison25′s favorite Spartan (Roe) comes through with a huge game.
