NCAA BASKETBALL: MAR 01 Michigan State at Illinois

Two Spartan warriors at the scene of their greatest triumph.

Mrs. SW and I will be at the Breslin Center to wish Messrs. Walton, Gray, Ibok, and (especially) Suton farewell.  Enjoy the game and GO STATE!

No matter the feelings about what Gray could have been, I’m glad to see him start!

  2. on March 8, 2009 at 11:07 am SpartanDan

Well, that was an ugly start. Give up a putback dunk then throw the ball away immediately.

  3. on March 8, 2009 at 11:10 am SpartanDan

And we have our first Hightower sighting. I thought I recognized his “blow the whistle 20 times” technique.

  4. on March 8, 2009 at 11:15 am SpartanDan

Looks like there’s a lid on both baskets. We can’t get a tip to fall, and Purdue’s been missing the open looks they’ve had.

  5. on March 8, 2009 at 11:22 am Jason

    Travis!!

  6. on March 8, 2009 at 11:25 am SpartanDan

You’re joking, Hightower. Morgan gets mauled on the shot, no foul.

  7. on March 8, 2009 at 11:35 am Sparty Basketball

    Two things so far:
    1) Like the first game, we aren’t converting our offensive rebounds.

    2) Purdue is not a good offensive rebounding team, but they are getting a lot of them right now.

  8. on March 8, 2009 at 11:40 am SpartanDan

Surprised Roe didn’t get called for a charge. We all know that’s Hightower’s favorite call.

  9. on March 8, 2009 at 11:44 am SpartanDan

Where was the foul there? There was hardly any contact!

(I know, ranting about the refs is boring … but sometimes it needs to be said. And I can’t see what’s going on at the moment because of a severe weather update on CBS.)

  10. on March 8, 2009 at 11:48 am SpartanDan

This has the feel of that Wisconsin game a couple years ago. Neither team seems able to put together a run of any sort.

  11. on March 8, 2009 at 11:56 am SpartanDan

Good play by Green to hack Johnson. All he does is dunk, so we should make him work for it.

  12. on March 8, 2009 at 11:59 am SpartanDan

Down 2 at the half. Our free throw problems have mainly been Gray and Roe, so that’s not a huge concern. We just have to start converting on our offensive rebounds.

  13. on March 8, 2009 at 12:09 pm Sparty Basketball

    Word.

  14. on March 8, 2009 at 12:20 pm SpartanDan

Missed the first three minutes of the half due to tornado warnings being issued west and northwest of here, but it sounds like good news that we’ve managed to force Purdue to take a timeout already.

  15. on March 8, 2009 at 12:31 pm SpartanDan

Nice swat by Roe. YOU! SHALL NOT! PASS!

  16. on March 8, 2009 at 12:33 pm SpartanDan

Roe looks like he’s trying to take over now. Biggest lead of the game.

  17. on March 8, 2009 at 12:38 pm Andrew

Why is it so difficult to throw a lob pass in front of the backboard? It has been a problem all season.

  18. on March 8, 2009 at 12:39 pm SpartanDan

I think part of the problem is that we keep insisting on going for alley-oops when we’re closely guarded. It doesn’t work so well when you have to worry about getting the ball around the defender and still put it on the money for an easy dunk.

  19. on March 8, 2009 at 12:44 pm SpartanDan

Wow, that was lucky. Not only did they miss a blatant travel by Walton (not quite a Duke moonwalk, but close), but Purdue couldn’t stay in bounds when picking off the bad pass.

  20. on March 8, 2009 at 12:51 pm SpartanDan

Defense has been in total lockdown mode all half. Four points allowed in the first 14 minutes of the half.

  21. on March 8, 2009 at 12:55 pm SpartanDan

How many fouls on MSU is that in the last ten seconds? Five? Hightower has apparently decided this game isn’t interesting enough yet.

  22. on March 8, 2009 at 1:01 pm MooTheKow

    Refs are awesome.

  23. on March 8, 2009 at 1:02 pm mk

All of a sudden, the lead has been reduced to 6 points. Purdue will drive to basket for getting foul. This is not over….

Without Suton, rebounding will suffer. Get a good position and grab that rebound!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. on March 8, 2009 at 1:06 pm mk

    stupid pass, morgan

  25. on March 8, 2009 at 1:06 pm spartan08

THey just switched over to the Missouri Valley game…are you freaking kidding me?

  26. on March 8, 2009 at 1:07 pm SpartanDan

And now CBS decides to cut away for the MVC championship pregame. Not even tip-off. I don’t think anyone’s going to care if they miss a couple minutes of that one, not even people 45 miles from ISU.

  27. on March 8, 2009 at 1:15 pm mk

here in texas, it’s still on.

  28. on March 8, 2009 at 1:17 pm spartan08

    Are the seniors still in?

  29. on March 8, 2009 at 1:17 pm TMadison25

    ibok just kissed the S.

  30. on March 8, 2009 at 1:20 pm Ben

Wow. We won the conference by FOUR games.

  31. on March 8, 2009 at 1:24 pm TMadison25

Who wins the tiebreaker between Michigan and Minnesota?

  32. on March 8, 2009 at 1:25 pm MooTheKow

Great year… fantastic way to send out the seniors today.

  33. on March 8, 2009 at 1:28 pm mk

Every senior had a chance to kiss the “S” (well, twice for ibok). Walton had a long real smooch, and I could feel his love for “S”. Well done, seniors!!!!

  34. on March 8, 2009 at 1:45 pm SpartanDan

TMad: Big Ten tourney scenarios are as follows:

Minnesota is locked into the 8-9 game (I think they’re the 8 seed unless Wisconsin wins and OSU loses), and will play the loser of OSU-NW.
Michigan gets the 6 if exactly one of Wisconsin and OSU wins; they get the 7 if either both win or both lose.
Wisconsin gets the 4 with a win, 5 if they lose and OSU loses, 7 if they lose and OSU wins.
NW gets the 6 with a win and Wisconsin loss, 7 with a win and Wisconsin win, 9 with a loss.
OSU gets the 4 or 5 with a win, 8 or 9 with a loss.
PSU gets the 4 if both Wisconsin and OSU lose, 5 if one wins, 6 if both win.

  35. on March 8, 2009 at 1:47 pm DP99

Loved that last traveling call on Lucas. Incredible.

    I feel alive!!!

  36. on March 8, 2009 at 1:48 pm TMadison25

Wow… Very impressive breakdown, SpartanDan. Thanks.

Looks like a game against Minnesota/Northwestern is most likely for us on Friday, right?

A lot on the line for OSU today.

  37. on March 8, 2009 at 1:50 pm TMadison25

Oh… and Jamil’s announcement in 40 minutes… Fingers are crossed!

  38. on March 8, 2009 at 1:51 pm Steve O

Great win, although the fact that it became a free throw shooting contest down the stretch took some of the game out of it. Generally speaking, it seems to me that in other elite conferences, officials don’t inject themselves into the game. I also don’t ever hear of individual officials’ names nearly as much. And In my opinion, that’s a great thing. Teams are allowed the time to develop a rhythm and make the game much more enjoyable to watch, while for the most part still allowing the great defense to be recognized.

But I may just be negatively biased against Eddie and TV Ted and the rest of them.

Anyway, Another top 50 win, great season, and much excitement in the coming weeks. And years to come for that matter. Speaking of years to come, any word on Jamil Wilson?

  39. on March 8, 2009 at 2:14 pm red_cedar

Congratulations to the Michigan State Spartans! I love this team and I see great things for you in the postseason. What a fun time to be a Spartan! Extra special thanks to the seniors.

  40. on March 8, 2009 at 2:39 pm Steve O

Answering my own question, the buzz @ Rivals says Wilson has selected MSU! (No link, since I don’t have a membership)

  41. on March 8, 2009 at 2:48 pm Ben

Yeah, apparently Wilson is going to Oregon. Bleh.

  42. on March 8, 2009 at 2:50 pm MooTheKow

Bummer.. kid gets to go disappear into obscurity ala that kid from Detroit … and probably end up playing for a coach he’s never met before.

Think World-Wide Wes played a hand in it this time too?

  43. on March 8, 2009 at 2:52 pm Ben

Yeah, Malik Hairston. Oh well, good luck to Jamil. He would have been stellar in (our) Green and White.

  44. on March 8, 2009 at 2:54 pm Steve O

Oops. Apparently read some ill informed posts, and just hoped it was true. It appears Nike is still a strong pull even when Oregon is in the middle of some tough times competitively.

But – Spartans still big 10 champs, and I didn’t even have to use my AK, so Today was a good day.

  45. on March 8, 2009 at 2:54 pm rook34

Wilson to Oregon. Good luck Jamil.

  46. on March 8, 2009 at 4:02 pm SpartyAlum

gr8 game and got a bit emotional watching the seniors depart.
Way to leave MSU..Big ten Champions!!
